No. 13 Women’s Squash Falls in Kurtz Cup Semifinals

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 13 George Washington women’s squash team earned three wins at the top of the ladder but was unable to get past No. 9 Dartmouth, falling 6-3, in the Kurtz Cup (B-Division) semifinals on Saturday evening at the College Squash Association (CSA) National Championships at Princeton’s Jadwin Squash Courts.

Senior Breanne Flynn led the team with a sweep over Jacqueline Barnes at No. 1, 11-8, 11-5, 11-2.

Freshman Engy El Mandouh defeated Anne Blasberg at No. 2 in a five-game battle. El Mandouh took the first match, 11-3, but Blasberg responded with an 11-9 win in the second. El Moundouh fought back in the third, 11-7, but Blasberg pushed a fifth game by taking the fourth, 11-5. El Mandouh rebounded in the fifth, 11-5, to clinch the victory.

Junior Mary Jo Mahfood matched Flynn’s sweep at No. 3, earning an 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 sweep of her own over Julia Potter.

The Colonials suffered tough losses at Nos. 4-9, as Dartmouth advanced to the Kutz Cup Championship match where they will face Drexel on Sunday.

The Colonials will take on No. 10 Brown on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The winner of that match will conclude the season as the No. 11 team in the nation.
