GW loses to Franklin & Marshall, rebounds against Haverford

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's squash team, ranked #27 in the preseason poll, downed #26 Haverford 5-4 on Saturday for their first win of the season. Earlier in the day, GW fell to #20 Franklin & Marshall, by the same score. Both matches were held in Haverford, PA.

In the day's early action, freshman Kate Bullard notched her first career win against historically tough F&M, recording a 3-0 defeat of Davina Buckley. The other Colonial wins came from graduate Maggie Alexander (3-1), sophomore Sybil Bunn (3-0) and senior Leah Sherman (3-0).

Later in the day, GW faced off against the host-school Haverford and tallied their first win of the young season. Bullard once again won her match by a 3-0 score and was the team's only two-match winner. Chelsea Mouta, one of the team's two freshmen, was also able to secure her first collegiate victory, downing Betsy Schmidt 3-0. Junior co-captain Bettina Scott fell behind early in her game, 2-0, but managed to rally for the 3-2 win. Other winners included sophomore Rachael Rayfield (3-0) and junior Alexa Miller, who, in the deciding game, rallied back from being down 2-0 to win, thus securing the match victory for GW.

 

 

The Colonials will play their first home match of the season this Saturday, November 18, against Haverford in the Health and Wellness Center.
