WASHINGTON - The No. 16 nationally ranked George Washington women's squash team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center, upsetting No. 12 Bates, 5-4, before falling to No. 5 Penn, 9-0. Against Bates (0-2), GW (2-1) used three key victories at the bottom of the ladder by junior Maya Nair (3-0 at No. 7), freshman Sarah Allen (3-0 at No. 8) and sophomore Adriana Calderon (3-0 at No. 9) to put the team in prime position to pull the upset. Freshman Alexa Tzarnas also battled for a five-set win at No. 5 to put GW just one win away from clinching the match. The Bobcats earned wins at Nos. 2-4, but it was freshman Anna Gabriella Porras' 3-1 win at No. 1 over Nessohorne Araffin that clinched the upset for the Colonials. No. 5 Penn won the nightcap over GW by a score of 9-0. The Quakers won each match in straight sets. The Colonials return to action next weekend with a road trip north to visit No. 23 Connecticut College (Fri., 7 p.m.), No. 19 Amherst (Sat., 1 p.m.), No. 21 Colby (Sun., 10 a.m.) and No. 3 Trinity (Sun., 1 p.m.).
