Jan. 21, 2014
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - George Washington women's squash sophomore Anna Gabriela Porras has been named the Harrow Sports College Squash Association (CSA) Female Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Porras, the first CSA All-American in GW squash program history, finished the weekend 2-0 and displayed an act of sportsmanship as the No. 12 Colonials went 3-0 with an upset over No. 10 Bates.
In Saturday's upset of No. 10 Bates, Porras rallied from an 0-2 deficit against Nesserine Arrifin on the strength of consecutive 17-15 victories in the third and fourth sets. In the fifth, Arrifin collapsed to the ground with leg cramps and Porras immediately put the competition aside and helped her opponent stretch out in the middle of the match before clinching the comeback with an 11-6 win.
On Sunday, Porras improved her record to a team-best 6-1 with an 11-1, 11-4, 11-0 win over Amherst's Ericka Robertson.
The Colonials travel to New Haven, Conn., next weekend for the annual Yale Round Robin. GW will face No. 15 Williams (Fri., 7:30 p.m.), No. 20 Bowdoin (Sat., 11:30 a.m.), No. 5 Yale (Sat., 2:00 p.m.) and No. 17 Middlebury (Sun., 11:30 a.m.) during the three-day event.
