GW Squash Announces 2012 Schedule
Colonials to Host Record Number of Home Matches in 2012-13
Sept. 20, 2012
WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's and women's squash teams, both coming of championship runs at last season's College Squash Association National Championships, have released their respective 2012-13 schedules, head coach Wendy Lawrence has announced.
"It is clearly our most demanding schedule we have ever had for both the men's and women's teams," said Head Coach Wendy Lawrence. "Seventy-five percent of the teams we have scheduled are ranked above us. Our goal is to take on this challenging schedule because it is the only way we are able to move up in the rankings. We decided to take a different approach and add more difficult matches so that we are pushed harder each week. Our goal is to reach the top-15 and move from the C-Division into the B-Division for this year's CSA Championships."
Both squads will open their respective seasons on November 2 as the Colonials welcome District-rival Georgetown to the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center. The Georgetown match is the first of nine scheduled home matches for the men's team while the women's team will host a total of eight matches on their home floor.
"We have a record number of home matches this season," said Coach Lawrence. "This shows we are on the rise as a program because teams are eager to play us and willing to make the trip to Washington. Bates, Penn and Princeton, all traditional powers in collegiate squash, have never played here before so it is exciting to attract these premier programs."
Planned enhancements to the GW Squash facilities for the upcoming season include bleacher-style seating and a new electronic scoring system to further enhance the viewing experience for the hundreds of fans that watch the Colonials compete on the glass-backed international courts.
Additional home matches for the teams include Bates (Nov. 17), Penn (Nov. 17), Princeton (women only, Dec. 8), Navy (men only, Jan. 16), Virginia (Jan. 26), Johns Hopkins (Jan. 27), Vanderbilt (men only, Jan. 27), Drexel (Feb. 2) and Franklin & Marshall (Feb. 8).
Both teams will also make the annual trip to the Yale Round Robin (Jan. 19-20) in addition to road matches at Connecticut College (Nov. 30), Amherst (Dec. 1), Colby (Dec. 2), Trinity (Dec. 2) and Brown (Feb. 3).
The men's team nationals will take place at Yale University, February 15-17, followed by the women's team nationals on February 22-24. Individual nationals will be hosted by Trinity, March 1-3.
