Colonials Athletics Weekend Preview

Senior MacKenzie Knox and the GW Volleyball team will close out the regular season with road matches at Rhode Island (Fri., 7 p.m.) and Fordham (Sat., 7 p.m.) before heading to Dayton, Ohio for the Atlantic 10 Championship (Nov. 18-20).

A preview of George Washington's athletic events this weekend. The Coloinals' men's and women's swimming teams will host Towson at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool Saturday while the volleyball, squash and cross country teams hit the road.

For a schedule of all GW Varsity Athletic events, check out the Lauren Whyte was named the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after totaling 44 kills against just 12 errors (2.39) in last weekend's victories over Saint Louis (Nov. 4, 3-2) and Duquesne (Nov. 5, 3-2).

Sophomore Jamie Armstrong also garnered Atlantic 10 weekly honors for the third time this season as she was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Armstrong averaged 1.30 blocks per set across the Colonials' two victories, highlighted by the victory over Saint Louis in which she posted nine block assists, including three in the decisive fifth-set victory.

SWIMMING

The George Washington men's and women's swimming teams host Towson on Saturday, Nov. 12 in their first home dual meet of the 2011-12 season. Action inside Charles E. Smith Center Pool is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

The women's squad is coming off its first dual meet victory of the year when the Colonials defeated Drexel, 164-98, last Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa. Freshman Janica Lee and sophomore Caroline Myers paced the Buff and Blue with a combined seven race victories.

In addition to her four first-place finishes, Lee snapped two Drexel Pool records. Individually, she broke the 200-yard breaststroke record with a time of 2:24.03, and also swam the second leg of a pool record-breaking 200-yard medley relay, along with teammates Lindsay Moore, Morgan Zebley and Sydney Saunders.

The men's team fell to Drexel, 170-110, last Saturday. Junior Phillip Graeter and sophomore Spencer Neff posted two first-place finishes apiece for GW. The Colonials also swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle event.

WOMEN'S SQUASH

The No. 14 nationally ranked George Washington women's squash team will head to Annapolis, Md., Saturday to face Drexel in the Navy Veteran's Weekend Invitational. The Colonials and Dragons will face off at 2 p.m., Saturday.

GW (1-0) opened its season with a convincing 9-0 victory over district-rival Georgetown on Nov. 4. The Colonials were dominant as they won eight of nine matches in straight sets, led by sophomores Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes at the top of the ladder.

MEN' S SQUASH

The No. 17 nationally ranked George Washington men's squash team will play a trio of matches this weekend at the Navy Veteran's Weekend Invitational in Annapolis, Md. The Colonials will face Drexel (2 p.m.) and Northwestern (4 p.m.) on Saturday and Hobart College on Sunday (12 p.m.)

GW (1-0) opened its 2011-12 campaign with a 9-0 victory over Georgetown at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts on Nov. 4. Junior Islam El-Fiky and seniors Jose Calderon and Adam Pistel each won in straight sets at the top of the ladder to lead the Colonials.

CROSS COUNTRY

Junior Julia Weir and sophomore Jackson Carnes will compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The men's 10,000-meter race begins at 12 p.m. with the women's 8,000-meter race following at approximately 1:15 p.m.

Weir, who has two top-10 finishes this season, last appeared at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals in 2009. She ran to a 168th-place finish in 26:24.
