Swimming Splits With Drexel

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted their counterparts from Drexel University Sunday and came away with a split as the Colonials women defeated Drexel, 177-103, while the GW men lost, 176-117, to the Dragons at GW's Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
There were six multiple winners for the victorious GW women. Seniors Ariana Berdini and Jessica Miga, junior Emily Leik, sophomores Paola Leor and Sarah Beggs and freshman Isabel Tawney each won at least one individual event and were part of a winning relay team. On the men's side, three Colonials freshmen, Davin Harding, Jason Khoury and Marshall Seedorff, each captured first place in at least two events.
The GW women took first place in 11 of the 16 events and placed 1-2 in five events and 1-2-3 in three events. GW also placed 1-2-3-4 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The GW women placed 1-2-3 in the 1,000-yard freestyle led by freshman Sarah Richards whose time of 10:56.2 was nearly 10 seconds ahead of teammate Kayla Jensen (11:06.98). Cissy Ye placed third in the event, three seconds behind Jensen with a time of 11:09.55. Richards also was the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle just getting out-touched by :09 of a second by Drexel's Jessica Csakai.
On the men's side, GW won five events, including 1-2 finishes in two of those events. Khoury won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.47, just .05 ahead of teammate Cascade Tuholske (54.52). In the 200-yard backstroke, Tuholske won the event with Khoury placing second. Khoury also was part of GW's winning 200-yard Medley Relay team along with Tom Pullen, Harding and Seedorff with a time of 1:37.84. Seedorff won the 50-yard freestyle and swam the anchor leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay.
"I'm really proud of the effort that everyone put forth at this meet," GW head coach Dan Rhinehart said. "The men had only 10 swimmers available to swim (some injured and some competing with the GW water polo team) and still put up some great times and were in the middle of some very competitive swims. We're at that point in the season where everyone is swimming tired and when we're doing that and still manage to put up 60 percent best times, the kids are doing a great job."
GW next swims on Friday-Sunday, Nov. 21-23, at the Patriot Invitational meet at George Mason University's Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, VA.
