Teams To Compete Againt Three A-10 Rivals at Rhode Island Invitational

WASHINGTON, DC - GW swimming & diving returns to the pool after a forty-day layoff to compete at the Rhode Island Invitational Fri.-Sat., Jan 11-12, at the Ram's Tootell Physical Education Center. Massachusetts and La Salle are also scheduled to compete in the two-day Invite.

The Minutemen were picked to win the Atlantic 10 prior to the season while its women were picked second behind Richmond. The Massachusetts men won the Atlantic 10 title last season, while the women placed second.

GW will meet La Salle for the second time this season as the Explorers defeated the Colonials on Nov. 3. Both teams are coming off solid performances at the Nutmeg Invitational hosted by Yale.

Both the Rhode Island men and women were picked one slot lower than the Colonials in the preseason poll but will have an advantage swimming at their home pool. Both men's and women's teams are coming off wins over Coast Guard.

In its previous meet on Dec. 1, both the Colonials men's and women's teams fell to Old Dominion.

Juniors David Zenk and Tom Pullen led the men's squad. Zenk captured the 100-yard backstroke in 51.48 and placed second in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.68) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.04). Pullen earned a pair of second place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.38) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.58).

Freshman Konrad Kopczynski also earned a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.66, while senior Drew Boudreau and freshman David Meyer both recorded third place performances.

 

 

Jessica Miga led the the women with victories in the sprint freestyle events. The junior out of Barneveld, NY took the 50-yard in 25.50 while capturing the 100-yard in 54.94. Miga also anchored the victorious 400-yard relay team along with freshman Sarah Beggs, junior Luciana Maggiolo and sophomore Emily Leik.

Fellow junior Ariana Berdini (100-yard breaststroke) and freshman diver Sarah Landry (1-meter dive) also picked up wins on the day.
