Arendes, Nachtwey Earn A-10 Rookie Honors
Freshman divers claim weekly awards after Senior Day sweep
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington swimming and diving swept Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors Tuesday with divers Gabriella Arendes and Peter Nachtwey both recognized. The freshmen shined on the boards Saturday against Old Dominion, helping the Colonials claim a pair of Senior Day victories to close the regular season.
Arendes won both events against the Monarchs, highlighting a banner diving day for GW. The freshman from New York scored 241.25 on the 3-meter board and set a career high with a 264 in the 1-meter competition. On the women’s side, the Colonials went 1-2-3 on both boards to score the maximum 32 diving points.
Nachtwey continued his strong freshman campaign with a victory on the 3-meter board (342.23) and a second-place showing in the 1-meter competition (290.03) behind teammate Jake Ortiz. Nachtwey’s winning score met the NCAA Zones qualifying standard, which the freshman from Ohio previously reached in October when he set the program record in the event against Boston College (362.62).
It’s the first A-10 honor for Arendes and first time a GW woman has won the award this season. Nachtwey was recognized for the fourth time this season, following a decorated fall that included wins on Nov. 7, Oct. 24 and Oct. 10.
With the regular season finished, GW has turned its focus to preparing for the A-10 Championships, which begin on Feb. 14 in Geneva, Ohio.
