March 2, 2017

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Five members of the GW women's swimming and diving team have earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors after a strong championship season.

Sophomore diver Miranda Simon was named to the All-Academic Team, while freshman Gemma Atherley, sophomore Emily Zhang, junior Abigail Fusco and senior Selin Ozturk landed Second Team distinction after their silver medal relay performance at the 2017 A-10 Championships.

"It's an honor for the conference to recognize these young women," said 2017 A-10 Swimming Coach of the Year James Winchester. "As a program, we have high standards in the classroom, community and in the pool, and to see that success recognized is very much appreciated. These student-athletes work hard in the classroom and pool everyday, and deserve this success."

A business administration major, Simon owns an impressive 3.98 GPA and posted a perfect, 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2016 semester to land on both the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and GW Athletics Academic Dean's List. The sophomore reached the championship final of the 3-meter boards at the A-10 Championships, taking eighth in the event. Simon is slated to compete at NCAA Zones next week for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month.

Atherley, Zhang, Fusco and Ozturk joined forces to reach the podium in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the A-10 Championships, snapping the program record in the process to earn All-Conference Second Team honors.
