Colonials to Host Bucknell, Towson and Georgetown at Charles E. Smith Center Pool
Sep 4, 2013
WASHINGTON – The George Washington men’s and women’s swimming programs have unveiled their 2013-14 schedule, 16th-year Head Coach Dan Rhinehart announced on Wednesday. The Colonials host three teams at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool to highlight the upcoming 10-meet schedule.
“We put together a solid schedule that will provide the challenges we need to prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships,” said Coach Rhinehart. “We face several tough teams throughout the year so it will be a good test to see where we are and what we need to focus on.”
GW opens the season on Friday, Oct. 4 at nearby American for the Potomac Relays, where the Colonials and the Eagles will only face off in relay events. The Buff and Blue then competes in a two-day quad meet against local rivals American, Catholic and Loyola (Md.). The four teams race on Friday, Oct. 11in Baltimore, Md., at Loyola before capping the event on Saturday, Oct. 12 at American.
On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Colonials welcome Bucknell for their first home meet of the season. Action inside the Charles E. Smith Center Pool is slated for 1 p.m. One week later on Saturday, Oct. 26, GW heads to nearby UMBC in Baltimore, Md., for a 1 p.m. meet, then continues its road swing onSaturday, Nov. 2 in Philadelphia, Pa., with a 1 p.m. meet at Drexel.
The Colonials return home on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they welcome Towson at1 p.m., then wrap 2013 competition at George Mason’s three-day Patriot Invitational from Thursday, Nov. 21 – Saturday, Nov. 23.
Over the university’s designated winter break, GW will travel to Dorado Beach in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico for its annual one-week January training trip. While in Vega Baja, the Colonials will use the seven days to focus on intensive training both in and out of the water to prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships.
“The training trip is a nice break up from the one-month lull between meets,” said Coach Rhinehart. “This is a week of very intensive training where we go to work and make our big push to get ready for the conference championships at the end of the season.”
GW kicks off 2014 in Kingston, R.I., and gets a taste of league competition at the Rhode Island Invitational. The Colonials’ women’s squad will face host Rhode Island, in addition to La Salle and Massachusetts, while the men’s side will face La Salle and Massachusetts.
The Buff and Blue then host district rival Georgetown on Saturday, Jan. 18 for its Senior Day meet and home finale. Seniors Taylor Cole, Melissa Fernandez, Rachael Johnston, Lindsay Moore, Caroline Myers, Remy Neville, Sloan Saunders, Sydney Saunders, Jake Mortensen and Spencer Neff will be honored prior to the meet, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
GW closes regular-season action with a dual meet at A-10 newcomer George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
For the second straight year, the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The four-day conference championships will run from Tuesday, Feb. 18 – Saturday, Feb. 22, and will feature 11 women’s programs and seven men’s programs.
