Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener to Old Dominion, 6-1

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The George Washington University women's tennis team fell to Old Dominion, 6-1, in its season opener on Friday, Jan. 21, at the Center Court Racket Club in Newport News. Freshman Kendall Swenson (Shaker Heights, OH) secured the Colonials' lone point at No. 3 singles with a three-set victory. ODU took an early 1-0 lead in the contest by sweeping all three doubles matches. Sophomore Anne Watkins (Naples, FL) and freshman Michelle Alexander (Charlotte, NC) kept it close at No. 3, but eventually fell 8-6 to Linda Garder and Barbara Kerner. In singles play, Swenson dropped the first set, 2-6, to Fernanda Luiz at No. 3, but rallied to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-1, respectively, for the win. Junior Anastasia Skavronskaia (Miami, FL) extended the Monarchs' Kerstin Endlich to three sets at No. 1, before falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. GW returns to action when it hosts Richmond on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 12:30 p.m. at the Montclair Country Club in Montclair, VA.
