GW Women's Tennis Edged, 4-3, at Navy
Robins, Pascarella and Nederlander Post Singles Victories for Colonials
Feb. 1, 2014
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - George Washington women's tennis dropped a tight 4-3 match at Navy on Saturday afternoon at the indoor Tose Family Tennis Center in the Brigade Sports Complex.
Rookie Taylor Nederlander, sophomore Lana Robins and senior Leah Pascarella earned singles victories for the Colonials, but it was not enough to overcome the Midshipmen's doubles point win to open the day.
"The team showed great energy and heart and we almost pulled out the win," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "Lana has been playing great tennis and she worked hard to get us our first point while Taylor dominated most of her match for our second point. Leah fought for every inch and kept the match alive with a dominating super tiebreaker victory. We have had some tight matches and we need to do better closing out sets. Our first two matches of the season were not easy but the tougher our opponents are the stronger we will become in the end."
Robins held Navy's Erin Snook to just two games in a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles spot. Picking up her second straight No. 2 singles victory, Pascarella fought back after dropping the first set to Darien Sears, 2-6, with a 7-5 (10-4) tiebreaker win. Nederland secured GW's third point of the day at the No. 4 spot with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Noelle Kaufmann.
The No. 1 doubles pair of Robins and freshman Grace Egger cruised to a 6-1 win to open the match, but the Colonials fell to the Midshipmen at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
GW opens home action on Friday, Feb. 14 when the squad welcomes Liberty to the indoor Wheaton Indoor Tennis Center in Wheaton, Md. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
