GW Women's Tennis Downs District Foe Howard, 5-2

ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington women's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2013 spring season on Saturday with a 5-2 win over local rival Howard at the indoor Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va.
After sweeping the doubles point at all three positions, GW (1-1) went on to claim singles victories at the Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 positions to secure the win over Howard (0-3).
The Colonials opened the match with a 1-0 lead with three straight doubles wins. The No. 1 pair of senior Mimi Hamling and junior Leah Pascarella earned an 8-3 win over Howard's Brittney Morgan and Katelyn Stokes. In the second flight match, the tandem of senior Dorota Lysienia and freshman Lana Robins defeated Talia Johnson and Umarah Mughnee, 8-2, and the No. 3 team of freshmen Christina Carpenter and Stephanie Wei earned an 8-3 decision over Audria Bell and Stacey Roheman.
In singles action, Robins nearly blanked the Bison's Brittney Morgan in the No. 2 match by set scores of 6-1, 6-2. Hamling earned a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (6) three-set victory over Talia Johnson in the No. 4 position, and Lysienia defeated Stacey Roheman at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. In the No. 6 spot Carpenter downed Audria Bell, 6-2, 6-1.
Pascarella fell to Katelyn Stokes in three sets in the No. 1 match by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Wei dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Umarah Mughnee in the third-flight match.
GW remains in the Washington, D.C., area as the Colonials head down the road to Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 9 for a 3 p.m. match.
