Women's Tennis Sweeps Patriots, 7-0
Feb. 5, 2011 WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW women's tennis powered past rival George Mason, 7-0, in a Saturday match-up at the Montclair Country Club. The Colonials swept through doubles matches, testing out two new doubles pairs at No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Freshmen Isabella Escobar and Leah Pascarell won, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, while captains Jacqueline Corba and Jennifer Hirsh won, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. GW kept the momentum heading into singles action with each of the Colonials defeating their Patriot opponents in straight sets. Freshman Julia Blakeley extended her winning streak at No. 2 singles two three matches when she defeated Lindsay Gray, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Mimi Hamling was tested in the second set of her No. 4 singles match against Brooke Blackwell. Hamling won the first set convincingly, 6-1, before Blackwell battled to force a tie-breaker. The Californian native buckled down to win 7-6 (7-1) in the second set for the Colonials. The Colonials continue weekend play against Howard on Sunday at the Montclair Country Club with matches beginning at 8:30 a.m.
