Colonials Defeat Rival Bison, 5-2

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW women's tennis team was tested when they took on DC-rival Howard on Sunday at the Montclair Country Club. The Colonials won 5-2, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Howard took an early 1-0 lead when the Bison won top two doubles matches. The No. 2 doubles match was a tough battle for GW captains Jacqueline Corba and Jennifer Hirsh, who pushed the match to a tie-breaker set. The Colonials were outlasted by the Bison, 9-8 (8-6).
In singles the Colonials stepped up their play and powered past the Bison, winning three matches that went to deciding third sets. Blakeley won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, to go to 4-0 on the season, while Hirsh won 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
The Colonials take on their first Atlantic 10 opponent of the season when the squad travels to Philadelphia, on Sunday, Feb. 13 to take on Temple at 12:00 p.m.
