Feb. 9, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis defeated James Madison, 6-1, Saturday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. With the victory, GW improved to 2-1 in the spring while JMU fell to 0-2. GW dispatched the Dukes by winning five of six singles matches and the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches. Sophomore Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) won in straight sets at No. 1 singles as did Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton) at No. 3 as well as senior Katarina Stastny (St. Louis, MO/ St. Joseph's Academy) at No. 6. First and Wei teamed to win, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles while Stastny and sophomore Nazli Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lyree de Galatasaray) won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. "I think the momentum we gained during the doubles point carried over to the singles matches," GW coach Helen Andrews said. "That was maybe the best I've seen Lindy [First] play and it was great to have the support of the crowd as well." Next up for the Colonials is a match against American University, tomorrow (Feb. 10) beginning at noon at the GW-Mount Vernon Tennis Facility.
