GW Women's Tennis Defeats Duquesne, 4-3, for Perfect A-10 Weekend
Colonials Kick Off Atlantic 10 Action with 2-0 Mark
Feb. 17, 2013
The Colonials (4-2, 2-0 A-10) claimed the doubles point over the Dukes (3-3, 1-1 A-10) and posted singles victories at the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 spots to follow up Saturday's 6-1 triumph over Saint Joseph's.
"Duquesne came out really strong today and caught us on our heels, but it was great to get the win and open conference play with two straight wins," said head coach Dawn Buth. "We will use this weekend to learn from mistakes that were made and we will make a lot of positive changes moving forward."
GW opened the match with a 1-0 lead after earning Nos. 2 and 3 doubles victories. The duo of senior Dorota Lysienia and freshman Lana Robins downed Duquesne's Judy Li and Alexa Miller, 8-1, at the No. 2 spot, and the No. 3 freshmen combination of Christina Carpenter and Stephanie Wei earned an 8-6 victory over Chandler Consonery and Daniela Osio.
In singles play, junior Leah Pascarella downed Li, 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 1 match, and Wei earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Sarah Shashurak in second-flight action. Senior Mimi Halming clinched the match for the Buff and Blue at the No. 4 spot with a three-set victory over Alexa Miller by scores of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
GW returns to the court in one week when the squad welcomes UMBC to the Montclair Country Club in Montclair, Va., on Sunday, Feb. 24 for a 5:30 p.m. match.
