Women's Tennis Falls To UMBC, 5-2

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team lost to Maryland-Baltimore County, 5-2, Sunday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. The loss dropped GW's record to 2-3 in the spring while UMBC improved to 3-2. After GW won the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, the Retrievers dominated the singles matches winning all but the No. 3 match where Colonials sophomore Nazli Genscoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lyree de Galatasaray) defeated UMBC's Tia Kaasalainen, 6-2, 6-2. Both sophomore Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) and junior Samantha Fisher (Greenwich, CT/Benjamin School) extended their singles matches to three sets at No. 1 and No. 5 before losing. The Colonials were without their No. 4 singles player, freshman Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) who suffered a knee injury in practice last Tuesday. Next up for the Colonials is a match against Howard, Friday, Feb. 22, beginning at 4:00 pm at the GW-Mount Vernon Tennis Facility.
