Feb. 23, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team defeated Howard, 6-1, Friday at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. The victory evened GW's record at 3-3 in the spring while Howard fell to 0-2. After GW won all three double matches, GW swept through the singles pairings losing only at No. 1 where Howard's Tatiana Okpala defeated sophomore Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla), 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. First won at No.1 doubles, however, with teammate Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton) by the score of 8-3. For the second straight match, the Colonials were without their No. 4 singles player, freshman Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) who suffered a knee injury in practice last Tuesday. Next up for the Colonials is a match against Davidson, Saturday, Feb. 23, beginning at 10:00 pm at the GW-Mount Vernon Tennis Facility.
