Women's Tennis Drops a Squeaker to American, 4-3

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Women's Tennis team lost a heartbreaker to American, 4-3, on Saturday, February 22, at the Tennis Center at College Park. The loss drops the Colonials to 1-3, while American evened their record at 1-1. GW failed to take the doubles point, but junior Nazli Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lyree de Galatasaray) teamed with sophomore Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) to win their match, 8-1. In singles play, senior Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton Comprehensive) gained her first singles victory of the dual match season, beating Sasha Zerkalova at the number one position, 6-4, 6-3. Gonca secured her second win of the day at number four singles by eeking out a tough match against Kristina Georgieva, 6-3, 4-6, (10-4). Freshman Estee Bartell (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines) continued her fine play so far this season by beating Brandi Kligman, 6-1, 6-0, at number six. The Colonials will look to even their record this weekend when they face Army on Friday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. and then Connecticut on Saturday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. in West Point, NY.
