March 9, 2002
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team defeated Atlantic 10 opponent, Fordham, 6-1, Saturday at the GW-Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. The victory evened GW's record at 5-5 in the spring. After the Colonials swept the doubles matches, Fordham's Ioana Dragan upended Nazli Genscoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lyree de Galatasaray) at No. 1 singles for GW's only setback of the match. Genscoy had to withdraw after suffering an injury. The Colonials had to play without their No. 4 singles player, freshman Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent), who is working her way back from an injury and is expected to return to the lineup later this month. Both sophomores Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) and Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton) won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles as did Katarina Stastny (St. Louis, MO/St. Joseph's Academy) at No. 4 and Bode at No. 5. The Colonials' Samantha Fisher (Greenwich, CT/Benjamin School) and Natasha Bode (Paradise Valley, AZ/Xavier Prep) teamed to win the No. 3 doubles match, 8-3. Fisher and Bode also were victorious at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Next up for the Colonials is a match against Toledo, Wednesday, March 13, beginning at 4 p.m. at the GW-Mount Vernon Tennis Facility.
