March 15, 2013
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The George Washington women's tennis team fell to No. 63 Santa Barbara, 5-2, on Friday afternoon, wrapping its Spring Break West Coast swing.
The Colonials (7-4) dropped their second straight match as they fell to their first nationally ranked opponent of the 2013 season in the Gauchos (11-5).
Freshmen Lana Robins and Stephanie Wei posted victories for the Colonials at the Nos. 2 and 3 singles spots, claiming GW's first and second points on the afternoon.
"Santa Barbara was a very consistent team today but we learned that we can absolutely compete at this level," head coach Dawn Buth said. "We need to work on giving ourselves room for error and minimizing free points, but our team is looking forward to taking what we learned from this match and bouncing back against Richmond this Saturday."
In second-flight play Robins defeated Paoloa Cos, 7-5, 6-1, and classmate Stephanie Wei earned a three-set decision over Priscila Garcia, 3-6, 6-4, 0-1, at the No. 3 spot.
In No. 1 singles play, sophomore Leah Pascarella fell to Kiersten Mechan, 7-5, 7-5, while senior Mimi Hamling fell to Stacy Yam, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot. In No. 5 singles action, Dorota Lysienia fell to Erica Cano, 6-3, 6-0 in No. 5 play and freshman Christina Carpenter fell to Karolina Kecki, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot.
