April 2, 2011
WASHINGTON, DC-- George Washington women's tennis battled the Longwood Lancers around stormy weather on Saturday for the 5-1 victory. The Colonials improve to 12-6 on the season while the Lancer fall to 3-4.
After a 45 minute delay due to wet courts from overnight rain, the Colonials took a quick 3-0 lead in singles action. Freshman Julia Blakeley won at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, as Mimi Hamling won at No. 4 singles with the same results. Freshman Leah Pascarella also won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
The three singles matches that were in progress when a rain and hail storm blew in were moved to an indoor facility to be completed.
Dorota Lysienia dropped the only Colonials match at No. 6 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(8).
GW wraps up the regular season at Towson on Sunday, April 3, with matches set to start at 11:00 am. The Colonials head to The Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, VA for the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championships on April 8-10. GW took second place in last season's conference tournament, where Colonials head coach Dawn Buth was named A-10 Coach of the Year.
