Women's Tennis Advances Past Xavier in A-10 Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The George Washington women's tennis team fought off Xavier, winning 4-1, in a late night Friday match that ended early Saturday. The match originally set for a 6:00 pm start, was pushed back to roughly 10:30 pm due to inclement weather and a regular season match for the Virginia women's tennis team using the facility.
Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn secured the first doubles point for GW, when they defeated Kally Alkire and Kelsey Kinnand, 8-2, at the No. 1 doubles match. Jacqueline Corba and Jennifer Hirsh secured the pivotal doubles point with their 8-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles action, freshman Leah Pascarella won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 3 match for the second point for GW. Hamling finished next with a 6-1, 7-5, victory at the No. 4 match to push GW to a 3-0 lead.
Xavier netted a point when Katie Pleiman defeated Corba 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 1 match.
For the second straight dual match, Hirsh wrapped up the team victory for GW with a win in her No. 5 singles match. Hirsh came back to defeat Ally Westling, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
The Colonials are set to take on No. 1 seed Richmond in a quarterfinal match, a re-match of last year's Championship finals, Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 pm. Richmond defeated GW, 4-0, for the 2010 A-10 title. This season the Spiders defeated the Colonials, 5-2, in a March 5 match-up in Richmond, VA.
