GW Women's Tennis Bows to Richmond in Quarterfinals of A-10 Championship

The Colonials took a 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point, but the Spiders claimed victories at the Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles spots to take the match. GW closes out the season with an overall record of 16-7 and a 3-3 mark in the A-10. GW opened Friday’s match with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to jump out to an immediate 1-0 lead. The first-flight duo of junior Mimi Hamling and senior Zoe Krohn defeated Richmond’s Helen Cunningham and Alex Smyth, 9-7, while the No. 3 pair of seniors Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner earned an identical 9-7 decision over Nil Horoz and Joanna Matuszczyk. In the No. 1 singles spot, Corba fell to Matuszczyk, 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Julia Blakeley dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Melissa Kandinata at the No. 2 spot. Hamling was defeated by Elizabeth Sims, 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 match, and sophomore Isabella Escobar fell to Smyth, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. It marked the third consecutive year that GW advanced to the quarterfinals and the third straight year bowing out to The Colonials will graduate three seniors this season - Corba, Tyner and Krohn - and are slated to return five members to their lineup in 2012-13.
