MONROEVILLE, PA - The George Washington University women's tennis team blanked 11th-seeded Rhode Island, 4-0, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship Friday morning at Club 4 Life. The Colonials, seeded sixth out 14 schools, swept the doubles point and won 3-of-6 singles matches to secure the victory.
In doubles play, seniors Anastasia Skavronskaia (Miami, FL) and Sandra Simunic (Westerville, OH) won their fifth straight match at No. 1 to lead the Colonials' sweep.
Skavronskaia also led the way at No. 1 singles with an easy 6-0, 6-0 triumph, while Simunic also won in straight sets at No. 3 and junior Mara Frisch (Tucson, AZ) notched her second straight singles win at the sixth position. Singles matches at the Nos. 2, 4 and 5 positions went unfinished as the final outcome was already decided.
The Colonials (6-9) return to action Saturday morning at 8 a.m. when they face either No. 3 Xavier or No. 14 St. Bonaventure in the second round of the three-day tournament.
