GW Women Open Season at Georgetown Invitational

Sept. 25, 2006

Results

WASHINGTON, DC -The George Washington University women's tennis team began play in their fall schedule over the weekend, competing in the Georgetown Invitational. The five-team tournament featured Georgetown, Howard, Marist, and the University of DC.

In the singles' competition, it was junior Kendall Swenson that emerged and took the title of tournament champion. She defeated Cassandra Strange (Marist) in the final, 6-2, 6-4. Swenson also competed in the doubles' competition, pairing with freshman Verena Knoedler to take second place. They downed fellow Colonials sophomore Madhuri Jha and senior Mara Frisch, 9-7, in the semi-finals before falling to the Strange sisters of Marist in the final, 8-4. Freshman Rachael Hesling played her way into the singles' back draw final before losing a heartbreaker to Mirelva Colon (Marist), 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8 supertiebreaker).

Head Coach Dawn Buth was pleased with the team's first tournament this season. "We were a little tentative going into this tournament and that was reflected the first day of the event. Each day, however, we became a little more confident and more supportive of one another and by the second and third day we really had some fantastic performances. Mara Frisch nearly beat Georgetown's #1 player, while Madhuri Jha and Rachael Honig played some very good tennis. Kendall Swenson had one of the best tournaments I've seen her play and is evolving into a very tough player to beat."

The women's tennis team will continue their fall play when they participate in the ODU Invitational October 13-15, in Norfolk, VA.
