Women's Tennis Concludes Play at Washington Baltimore Challenge

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's tennis team competed this past weekend, Oct. 1-2, at the 2005 Washington Baltimore Challenge, hosted by Georgetown at its McDonough Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Colonials were joined by American, Maryland-Baltimore County and the host Hoyas at the tournament.

On Saturday, the Colonials faced off against Georgetown in doubles play and UMBC in both singles and doubles. Against the Hoyas, the duo of sophomores Tracy Stecko (Lake Forest, IL) and Kendall Swenson (Shaker Heights, OH) notched the Colonials' lone victory with an 8-4 triumph over Kristin Dew and Natalie Newman at No. 2.

In doubles action against UMBC, seniors Anastasia Skavronskaia (Miami, FL) and Sandra Simunic (Westerville, OH) won at No. 1, 8-4, while junior Mara Frisch (Tucson, AZ) and freshman Madhuri Jha (Oak Brook, IL) teamed together at No. 3 to post an 8-4 win. Skavronskaia and Jha continued their strong play over into singles action against the Retrievers with victories at the first and fourth spots, respectively. Swenson was also victorious with an 8-2 win over Elizabeth Anderson.

Playing against American in both singles and doubles, and Georgetown in singles on Sunday, GW won all three of its doubles contests and six-of-10 singles matches. Swenson remained perfect on the weekend with an 8-2 victory over American's Malvina DeLaCanal and an 8-4 triumph over the Hoyas' Adriann Gin, both at No. 2. Jha also remained unbeaten in singles with an 8-3 win over American's Merrisa Hollinger, while downing Georgetown's Taylor Martin, 8-6, at the fourth spot.

 

 

Additionally in singles, Stecko won her match at No. 3 against American's Brandi Kligman, 8-6, while Skavronskaia won her second singles match at the top spot with an 8-3 victory over the Hoyas' Stephanie Cohen.

GW is back on the courts when it travels to Newport News, VA, for the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newports News, Oct. 14-16, hosted by Old Dominion University.
