Michelle Alexander Leads Women's Tennis at Maryland Invitational

Alexander finishes on top in consolation final in Flight B singles

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Freshman Michelle Alexander (Charlotte, NC) was victorious in the consolation finals in Flight B singles and teamed with senior Natasha Bode (Paradise Valley, AZ) to win two of three matches in Flight A doubles to highlight action for the GW women's tennis team at the Maryland Invitational, Sept. 24-26.

Alexander advanced to the quarters in the Flight B singles bracket after American's Malvina De La Canal withdrew. She defeated Catherine Zawadzki of Syracuse, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, to make it the semifinals, before falling to second-seeded Masha Senic of Maryland. Alexander claimed the consolation final after Katie Bramante of Syracuse withdrew.

Sophomore Anne Watkins (Naples, FL) recorded the lone win for the Colonials in Flight C singles, defeating Adriann Gin of Georgetown, 6-3, 6-4, in consolation play.

In doubles play, Alexander and Bode fell to Akane Kokubo and Mollie Edinson of Cornell, 8-2, after a first round bye. The duo then notched two straight victories out of the losers bracket to close play, defeating Ming Leong and Bramante of Syracuse, and Kelly Walsh and Natalie Prinz of West Virginia, 8-6.
