Women's Tennis Makes Its Presence Felt at Army Tournament

Oct. 5, 2003

WEST POINT, NY - The George Washington University's women's tennis team competed at the Army Tournament from Friday, October 3 to Sunday, October 5. Senior Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) won the number two singles draw and both senior Nazli Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lycee de Galatasaray) and junior Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) reached the quarterfinals of their draws.

First breezed through her first two matches winning 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1. It got a little tougher in her third match, but she was able to take the third set winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, to set up the final versus Allison Davidson from St. John's. The match was tightly contested and First eventually outdueled Davidson in three sets, 6-2, 6-7, 10-6.

Gencsoy also had an easy time reaching the quarterfinals only dropping two games in her four sets. But, things changed quickly in her quarterfinal match, losing to Milena Matijevic of Niagra, 6-1, 6-0. Gonca won her first match, 6-3, 6-2, but was bounced from the tournament in a tight match by Krystina Bachner of LIU, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

Freshman Mara Frisch (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) came from behind to win her first match in the number four singles draw, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6, but was unable to advance any further after losing to UConn's Jennifer LoRusso, 6-1, 6-0.

Junior Natasha Bode (Paradise Valley, AZ/Xavier Prep) and sophomore Estee Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) competed in the number one singles draw, but were unable to advance after losing to a team from St. John's, 9-7.

The Colonials will now look forward to taking on cross-town rival, Georgetown, on Friday, October 10.
