NEWPORT NEWS, VA - George Washington University sophomore Kendall Swenson (Shaker Heights, OH) won the Flight B-2 Singles bracket this past weekend, Oct. 14-16, at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News, hosted by Old Dominion at the Huntington Park and Center Court Racket Club.
Swenson, who has had a solid fall season thus far, topped Radford's Daniela Milano in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, before defeating Ashley Lipton of Syracuse, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (6) in round two. In the semifinals, Swenson knocked off VCU's Camille Ripert, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6) to advance to the finals. Playing against Bethan James of Virginia Tech for the title, Swenson dropped the first set 6-0, but rallied for the victory by taking the final two sets 6-4, 1-0 (4).
In Flight A Singles action, senior Anastasia Skavronskaia (Miami, FL) advanced to the second round after George Mason's Andrea Fusea withdrew, but fell to Ale Pedergana of UMBC in round two, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (11).
In other singles play, sophomore Tracy Stecko (Lake Forest, IL) won her opening round Flight B-1 singles match over Pittsburgh's Leah Friedan, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9), while freshman Madhuri Jha (Oak Brook, IL) and junior Mara Frisch (Tucson, AZ) each won consolation matches in their respective singles flights.
Stecko and Swenson teamed together in Flight A doubles play as well and defeated Howard's Laura Marin and Jasmine Smith, 6-3, in the first round, before bowing out in the quarterfinals.
The Colonials return to action when they travel to West Point, NY, for the ITA Regional Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 22, through Wednesday, Oct. 26.
