Women's Tennis' Hesling Wins Flight D-1 Singles at Hampton Roads Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -George Washington University freshman Rachael Hesling won the Flight D-1 Singles bracket this past weekend, Oct. 13-15, at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News, hosted by ODU.

Hesling, who played well at the Georgetown Classic last month, topped Virginia Wesleyan's Shannon Sabo in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, before defeating Whitney Tillman of Temple in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4. In the semifinals, Hesling downed Georgetown's Shelley Murveit, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Hesling faced-off against JMU's Kelly Maxwell for the title and dropped the first set 6-1 before rallying for the victory by taking the final two sets, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5).

In Flight A Singles action, junior Kendall Swenson advanced to the second round after defeating Mary Napier (JMU), 6-0, 6-0, but eventually fell in the second round, 6-3, 6-4, to Pittsburgh's Lead Friedman. In Flight C-1, freshman Verena Knoedler won her first two matches and advanced to the semifinals, before falling, 7-5, 6-1 to Pittsburgh's Christie D'Achille.

In Flight B-1, junior Tracy Stecko lost her opening round match-up against George Mason's Julie Moscato, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). In other singles' play, senior Mara Frisch lost her opening round match in Flight B-2 to Steph Cohen of Georgetown, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5), senior Rachael Honig won in round one but was tripped up in the second round and freshman Michelle Style was victorious in her first round consolation match in Flight D-2.

Hesling teamed with Honig in Flight A doubles play, but fell in the opening round to Borza/Freidman (Pittsburgh), 8-3. The Colonials continue their fall schedule when they travel to Hanover, NH, for the ITA East Regional Tournament on Friday, Oct. 20, through Tuesday, Oct. 24.
