Pascarella, Robins Move on in Singles; Hamling and Robins Advance in Doubles

Senior Mimi Hamling and freshman Lana Robins defeated a West Virginia pair, 9-8 (7-4) to advance to the round of eight.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The George Washington women’s tennis team completed a successful Day 2 of the 2012 USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region includes schools located in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. The tournament is a single-elimination format and winners of the singles and doubles flights will earn automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championship in November.

After earning her way to the main draw with back-to-back singles qualifying victories, freshman Lana Robins defeated Virginia Tech’s Tea Ivanovic, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to Round 2. Robins will face the tournament's No. 1 seed Petra Januskova of Penn State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Junior Leah Pascarella downed Dana Oppinger of Marshall, 6-2, 6-4, and will play Penn State’s Chelsea Utting on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Senior Mimi Hamling won the first round of consolation singles with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 defeat of Chelsea Russell of Morgan State. The duo of Hamling and Robins defeated Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Challal of West Virginia, 9-8 (7-4) to advance to the round of eight.
