NORFOLK, Va. – Sophomore Julia Blakeley earned back-to-back three-set wins over first-ranked Jordan Hansbrough from Maryland and Temple’s Paola Calderon on Friday to lead the GW women’s tennis team on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championship. Junior Mimi Hamling and senior Zoe Krohn also posted a first-round doubles victory to advance to the second round of the main draw at Old Dominion’s Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

In her first match of the day, Blakeley pulled out a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5 upset win over top-ranked Hansbrough in a match that lasted a noteworthy three and a half hours. In the second round of qualifying action Blakeley took care of Calderon, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, in another three-hour match to advance to the main singles draw on Saturday.

“Julia had two outstanding performances today,” said head coach Dawn Buth. “She beat out the No. 1 seed, then turned around and beat another terrific player.”

In doubles play, Hamling and Krohn defeated West Virginia’s Ikttesh Chahal and Emily Mathis, 8-5, to move on to the second round of the main doubles draw.

In other singles play, senior Jacqueline Corba dropped a hard-fought three-set match to No. 2 seed Carmen Sandor from Penn State, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Leah Pascarella fell to No. 3 seed Katie Kargl from William and Mary, 6-0, 6-0.

“We finished the day really strong with doubles play,” said Buth. “Mimi and Zoe played really smart and aggressive, and I’m really happy with their performance.”

The Colonials return to the court in Norfolk, Va., Saturday morning.
