Women's Tennis Participates in Old Dominion Tournament

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The George Washington University's women's tennis team competed in the Old Dominion Tournament from Friday, October 17 to Sunday, October 19. The trip was highlighted by senior Nazli Gencsoy's (Istanbul, Turkey/Lycee de Galatasaray) victory in the A-2 singles consolation bracket, junior Sevla Gonca's (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) victory in the C-1 singles consolation bracket and Gonca and freshman Anne Watkins (Naples, FL/Community School of Naples) trip to the finals in the C-2 doubles bracket.

After losing in the round of 16, Gencsoy went on to win three straight matches to win the consolation bracket of the A-2 singles draw. Gonca won four straight matches to take the C-1 consolation bracket including an 8-4 victory over Lauren Graham of James Madison in the final. Gonca and Watkins defeated teams from Radford and NC State before dropping the final to a team from James Madison.

Watkins also picked up a singles victory in the D-1 bracket defeating Allison Barry of NC State, 6-4, 6-1. The only other singles victory on the weekend was secured by junior Natasha Bode (Paradise Valley, AZ/Xavier Prep) in the B-2 singles draw.

In other doubles action, the team of senior Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) and sophomore Estee Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) reached the semifinals in the B-1 draw before being bounced by a team from NC State.

The women will now travel to Blacksburg, VA to play in the Omni Hotel Tournament from Friday, October 24, to Sunday, October 26.
