Weingarten Paces Women's Tennis In First Round of Cornell Indoor Classic

ITHACA, NY (Jan. 28) -- Senior Sarine Weingarten picked up a victory in the Flight "B" singles and paired with sophomore Katarina Stastny to claim a Flight "A" doubles upset victory as the George Washington University women's tennis team completed first round competition Friday in the Cornell University Women's Tennis Winter Indoor Classic in Ithaca, NY.

Weingarten pulled out the singles victory in the third set in a hard-fought, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, contest over Seton Hall's Evelyn Macko. Sophomore Susie Coggin recorded the only other singles victory for GW with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback win over Army's Annie Collier.

Freshman Tracy Wei lost to top-seeded Shareen Lai from Syracuse, 6-1, 6-1 in a Flight "A" singles match. Senior Ghada Skaff also lost in the Flight "A" singles, 6-3, 6-4, to Penn State's Ali Barnett. Skaff went on to defeat Massachusetts' Helena Horak, 7-5, 6-1, in a Flight "A" consolation match.

Stastny fell 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 in a heartbreaker to Army's Melissa Sentelle in a Flight "B" singles match. After losing the first set, Stastny stayed alive with a 7-6 (5) second set tiebreaker win before succumbing in the third set with a tight 7-5 decision. Stastny went on to fall 6-3, 6-2, to Massachusetts' Annie Hamilton in a Flight "B" consolation match.

Sophomore Lisa Borromeo was blanked 6-0, 6-0, in a Flight "D" singles match against Columbia's Ilene Weintraub. Borromeo went on to defeat Syracuse's Tricia Sargent, 6-3, 6-3, in a Flight "C" consolation match.

The Colonials had a bit more success in doubles play. Weingarten and Stastny paired to upset the third-seeded Flight "A" doubles team of Lai and Anna Khvalina from Syracuse, 9-7. Wei and Skaff paired for an 8-6 victory over Pille Arike and Judy McAuley from Seton Hall in Flight "A" doubles.

Coggin and freshman Samantha Fisher fell 8-4 in a Flight "B" doubles match against Columbia's Tina Romic and Shelly Mittal.

Second round play continues Saturday with the tournament champions in each flight being determined on Sunday.
