Women’s Tennis Plays Pair of Matches this Weekend

SERVING FIRST:The George Washington women’s tennis squad is set for a pair of weekend matches as the Colonials host Long Beach State on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center (STLC) before visiting Maryland on Sunday at noon.

LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials (3-2) went the distance and nearly completed a comeback win, but West Virginia clinched a 4-3 victory to edge the Buff and Blue in Morgantown on Saturday.

ABOUT LONG BEACH STATE: The Beach (2-2) came up short in Big West Conference action on Saturday, falling to Hawaii, 5-2. Senior Lena Pacholski’s seven straight singles win streak was snapped by Hawaii sophomore Petra Melounova, contributing to the Rainbow Wahine’s victory.

SERIES HISTORY: The then-No. 51 49ers proved too much for George Washington during their last meeting in 2010. Long Beach State triumphed, 6-1, to open the spring season, despite the Colonials earning wins at both No. 1 singles and doubles spots.

ABOUT MARYLAND: The Terps’ (1-3) were edged, 4-3, by William & Mary on Saturday afternoon. Maryland will also face Long Beach State on Saturday before battling the Colonials on Sunday in College Park.

SERIES HISTORY: GW fell at Maryland in the regular season finale, 7-0, in 2016. Then-sophomore Marie-Louise Decamps and then-freshman Sara Grubac both took the Terrapins to three sets before ultimately dropping the decisions.
