GW's Sevla Gonca Named A-10 Rookie of the Week

April 1, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Sevla Gonca (Ankara, Turkey/Bilkent) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week, the league office has announced.

Gonca (pronounced Gon-cha) returned from a knee injury to win both of her singles matches and a doubles match last week. She won in straight sets at No. 6 singles Mar. 28 at George Mason and shut out Karen Toner of La Salle on Mar. 30 at GW's Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. She also teamed with Tracy Wei to win, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles against the Explorers.

Gonca improved her singles record to 3-3 on the season (1-3 at No. 4, 2-0 at No. 6) as GW won both matches last week.

GW (9-5) has won its last six matches. The Colonials host Xavier on Friday, April 5, at the Mount Vernon Tennis Facility. That match begins at 4:00 p.m.
