15 GW Athletics Teams Recognized by NCAA for Perfect Academic Progress Rate
GW Sees a Conference-High Nine Teams With APR in Top 10 Percent by Sport
May 7, 2014
WASHINGTON - The NCAA announced Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) on Wednesday with 15 George Washington Athletics programs having achieved a perfect score.
Of GW Athletics' 19 NCAA teams (men's rowing, sailing and men's and women's squash do not compete in the NCAA), 15 achieved a perfect 1000 score for the 2012-2013 academic year, including baseball, men's and women's basketball, women's cross country, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, women's rowing, women's soccer, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's water polo.
"Athletics has been a campus leader in striving for academic excellence, and this announcement is a testament to those efforts," said George Washington University Provost Steve Lerman. "The university commends our student-athletes, administrators and coaches who share our belief in that pursuit."
Seven GW teams achieved a perfect 1000 score for their Multiyear Rate, including women's cross country, women's soccer, women's swimming, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's water polo. Baseball and men's basketball were also recognized for achieving a multiyear APR in the top 10 percent in their sport. GW's nine teams recognized tied with Dayton for the most in the Atlantic 10.
"At GW our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff strive for excellence in everything that we do, and today's report is proof of the tireless efforts put into academics," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero. "I am very proud of what has been achieved and what it says about the athletics program here at George Washington."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The current multi-year period reflects the 2009-10 through 2012-13 academic years.
"To have 15 teams with a perfect APR last year and nine with a Top 10 percent multiyear rate is outstanding," said Associate Athletics Director of Educational Support Services Karen Ercole. "The student-athletes and staff who work closely with them should be commended for their commitment to academics and embracing the educational experience that being a student-athlete provides."
Today's announcement is part of the NCAA's overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight schools that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes.
