Maria Siopacha Represents Cyprus at 2017 Fed Cup
Rising junior plays for her country for the sixth consecutive year
George Washington women’s tennis rising junior Maria Siopacha represented her home nation of Cyprus as a member of its Fed Cup team in June. This summer marked her sixth consecutive year competing for Cyprus, making her the longest reigning member of the team.
“Even though tennis is an individual sport, competing at Fed Cup and representing my country every year has taught me well what it means to fight and give a 100% of your effort and energy not just for yourself but most importantly for your team, just like college tennis at the George Washington University,” said Siopacha. “I can definitely say that my experience at GW worked as a great advantage towards my participation at Fed Cup as it gave me a great sense of team spirit.”
Playing in Europe/Africa Zone Group III, Siopacha helped lead her Cyprus squad to their first ever Fed Cup play-off round after defeating Kenya, Ireland, and Iceland in the first round of competition. Along with doubles partner Eliza Omirou, Siopacha posted a perfect 2-0 doubles record and blanked all three opponents in singles competition, helping her team make national history in the process.
“Although after reaching the finals we lost to Moldova, the feeling of winning and writing history for my country is indescribable and it is an experience I will always carry with me,” said Siopacha. “I also firmly believe that even though we are such a young team, we have the potential to grow and hopefully get better results in the upcoming years.”
