WASHINGTON – George Washington head women’s tennis coach Dawn Buth announced today that University of Virginia standout Maria Fuccillo will join the Colonials’ staff as an assistant coach.

A local product from Rockville, Md., Fuccillo graduated from Virginia this spring as a member of the most successful class in Cavaliers’ women’s tennis history after amassing 74 dual wins and making four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Sweet Sixteen.

“We are so pleased to welcome Maria to our program,” said Buth."Having competed for a first-rate team, Maria knows what it takes to be successful. She will add tremendous value to our program and our student-athletes will surely benefit.”

During her final collegiate season, Fuccillo guided her team to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and a No. 15 final team ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Over her four-year career with the Cavaliers, Fuccillo compiled an overall singles record of 95-53 and was individually ranked as high as No. 76 by the ITA. She also earned a 102-56 career doubles record and was ranked as high as No. 16 in the ITA doubles rankings.

“I am really excited and look forward to joining Coach Buth’s staff and working with the women’s tennis team,” Fuccillo said. “High goals have been set for the program and I’m ready to help the team do what it can to achieve those goals.”

Throughout the summer, Fuccillo has been working with Matz Clausen at the Ossa Academy in Potomac, Md., where she coaches high school juniors who aspire to play tennis in college.

In addition to working with the Colonials’ squad, Fuccillo will pursue a master’s degree in education at GW.
