George Washington Selected To Compete in ECAC Women's Invitational Tennis Championships

Oct. 7, 2002

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW Women's Tennis team was selected as one of the 16 teams that will compete in the ECAC Women's Invitational Tennis Championships held on October 12-14 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

The tournament uses a "team championship" format in which one team faces another in six singles and three doubles matches. The championship will be decided in a final match on the third day of competition. The top eight teams are seeded with one and two, as well as, three and four being determined by individual coin flips. The five through eight positions along with the rest of the field will be determined by a blind draw. Match-ups will be finalized at the coaches meeting on October 11.

Joining George Washington in the field are one through eight seeds Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Boston College, Boston University, Cornell and Columbia with the rest of the field made up of Army, Connecticut, Dartmouth, Georgetown, James Madison and Rutgers with one selection yet to be determined.

In the 64 years since its inception, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has emerged as the nation's largest conference. The ECAC has grown considerably from its charter membership of 58, currently boasting 315 member schools in Divisions I, II and III, ranging in location from Maine to North Carolina.
