George Washington Women Prove Worthy of ECAC Selection

Oct. 16, 2002

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY - The GW women's tennis team went 1-1 at the ECAC Invitational held at the USTA National Tennis Center on October 11-14. The Colonials were unable to figure out Brown University, which won 4-1, on Friday, but won a thriller against Rutgers on Saturday, 4-3.

Junior Nazli Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lyree de Galatasaray) led the team with three victories, two in singles and one in doubles competition, including the clincher in the last match against Rutgers. Senior Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton Comprehensive) added two victories, one each in singles and doubles.

Senior Samantha Fisher (Greenwich, CT/The Benjamin School), sophomore Natasha Bode (Paradise Valley, AZ/Xavier Prep) and freshman Estee Bartell (San Diego, CA/Torrey Pines) each tallied a victory for the Colonials.

The Colonials were scheduled to play James Madison in their next match of the back draw, but due to weather and a lack of courts, the match was unable to be played. Therefore, they finished in the top 12 with places 9-12 not being determined.

Up next, GW will face Georgetown at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Saturday, October 19 at 12:00 pm.
