Volleyball Rallies to Win Season Opener, 3-2, Over Wofford

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The George Washington volleyball team stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to knock off Wofford, 3-2, on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the UT Invitational at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Set 1: Wofford 30, GW 28

  • Neither team was able to build a lead of more than two points in the early portion of the set.
  • Wofford pulled ahead, 20-17, but the Colonials responded with three straight points to knot the score at 20-20.
  • GW faced set point on multiple occasions late in the frame but Wofford pulled away down the stretch for the 30-28 win.

    Set 2: Wofford 26, GW 24
  • GW sprinted out to an 8-3 lead to open the second set. The lead was eventually extended to 18-13, prompting a timeout by Wofford.
  • The Terriers stormed out of the stoppage with a 9-4 run to knot the score at 22-22.
  • The teams traded points until a 24-24 deadlock before Wofford clinched the set with a service ace and a Colonial attack error.

    Set 3: GW 25, Wofford 22

  • GW fought through eight ties and four lead changes to take the third set, 25-22.
  • The Colonials recorded a trio of service aces in the frame, with a pair coming from graduate student Stacey Benton.
  • Sophomore Skylar Iott recorded five of her 11 kills in the third while sophomore Alexis Lete led the front line with a pair of block assists.

    Set 4: GW 25, Wofford 17
  • GW dominated the fourth set, swinging .379 (13k-2e-29a), en route to a 25-17 win.
  • Iott again put together a flawless set with six errorless kills.
  • The Colonials led late, 24-13, and turned away a late rally to tie the match at 2-2.

    Set 5: GW 15, Wofford 5
  • GW opened the fifth on a 6-1 run and never trailed on the way to the match-clinching 15-5 win.
  • The Colonials limited the Terriers to just three kills in the frame while recording four blocks and 14 digs.
  • The attack swung .500 (9k-1e-16a) in the final set.

    Key Stats

  • GW swung .248 for the match compared to .138 for Wofford.
  • The Colonials boasted significant defensive advantages in digs (76-52) and blocks (8.0-4.0)
  • Three Colonials put down double-digit kills, led by an efficient 15 winners from Iott (.520)
  • Junior Kelsey Clark (11 kills) and sophomore Jordan Young (11 kills) also finished in double figures.
  • Freshman Callie Fauntleroy had a flawless collegiate debut with eight errorless kills (.727) and two blocks.
  • Sophomore Jaimeson Lee double-doubled with 40 assists and a career-high 12 digs.
  • Freshman Sydney Welch led all players with 30 digs.
