Volleyball Wins Season Opener Over GMU, 3-2

FAIRFAX, VA - The GW volleyball team opened the 2003 season with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over George Mason Friday morning at warm and muggy John Linn Gym on the campus of George Mason University. After dropping a close first game, 28-30, the Colonials outscored GMU, 30-18, 24-30, 30-24, 15-13 in the first match of the Brion's Grill/Doubletree Patriot Invitational.

Senior Ruth Lazzari had a team-high 17 kills to go with 16 digs while setter Lauren Dunning contributed 44 assists and hit an errorless .625 with five kills in eight attempts. Senior Sarah Hokom added 11 kills and 17 digs while Laura Harrison contributed eight kills.

GW freshman Kelly Kabbes (Cary, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) started her first collegiate match and fellow freshmen Kaimana Lee (Wailuku, HI/Seabury Hall) and Juliene McLaughlin (Lindsay, Ontario/Lindsay Collegiate) also saw action in their first college match. Kabbes hit .375 with six kills and no errors in 16 swings.

GW (1-0) hit .242 (61-21-165) as a team with 73 digs compared to .151 (65-37-185) and 72 digs by the Patriots.

GMU (0-1) was led by Brazilian Aline Pereira's 28 kills and 13 digs each from Jessica Umansky and Milena Racic 11 digs. Both teams struggled with their serves as GW committed 17 service errors while the Patriots gave up 18 points on serving errors.

Conditioning was paramount as the match lasted two hours, 30 minutes and included several stoppages to wipe moisture from the floor as well as an injury to GMU libero Zulma Rojas during the first game.

 

 

GW plays two more matches in the Invitational beginning with the University of Cincinnati at 5:30 Friday and Fairfield at 3:00 pm Saturday. Southwest Missouri State and Georgetown also are in the tournament field.
