WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Volleyball team captured its second title in the four-year history of the DC Challenge Saturday at AU. The Colonials improved to 3-0 with a 3-0 sweep of George Mason in the fifth match of the 2009 DC Challenge Saturday afternoon at American University's Bender Arena. GW triumphed by the scores 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 in one hour, 23 minutes. The Colonials also won the inaugural DC Challenge in 2006 with a perfect 3-0 record.
Senior Katie Butz led the Colonials with 12 points on a match-high 10 kills while hitting .444 with a block solo and two block assists. She was named the tournament's MVP for her performances in the three matches. She scored a combined 46.5 points and hit .310 with 37 kills and 15 total blocks for the weekend. Abby Syverson hit an errorless .750 with six kills in eight attempts. Junior Leah Hill added six kills and 10 digs for nine points. Both Syverson and Hill were named to the All-Tournament Team.
After the Colonials took the first set, 25-17, GW had to battle to win the second set, 25-21. After the first two competitive sets, the third was anticlimactic as the Colonials rolled to a 25-14 victory after reaching match point with a 24-11 lead.
GMU (2-1) was led by Holly Goode's seven kills and eight digs while teammate Kaola Matsuoka also recorded eight digs. GW out-hit the Patriots, .287 (42 k-15 e-94 att.) to .088 (28 k-19 e-102 att.) for the match.
With the victory, the Colonials now lead GMU, 28-8, in the all-time series dating back to 1975.
The GW-GMU match was the fifth in the six-match DC Challenge. The DC Challenge is a round-robin tournament that features Georgetown and American in addition to the Colonials and Patriots.
GW (3-0) next plays Iowa State in the Minnesota Diet Coke Classic on Sept. 4 in Minneapolis.
