Volleyball Uses Depth to Stop Stags, 3-0

FAIRFAX, VA - The GW volleyball team breezed to a 30-20, 30-27, 30-20 victory over Fairfield Saturday afternoon on the campus of George Mason University. All 14 Colonials saw action against the outmanned Stags who suited up just seven players in the one-hour, 22-minute match. The Colonials improved to 3-0 (9-3 games record) on the season and was the only undefeated team in the Brion's Grill/Doubletree Patriot Invitational.

Sophomore Lindsey Vernand, the 2002 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, was the big gun for GW with 11 kills while hitting .421 (11-3-19) to go with eight digs

Sophomore Abigail Hatter continued her fast start with her second straight errorless match by hitting .571 (4-0-7). Hatter had 10 kills in 19 swings with just one error (.474) for the tournament.

The Colonials outhit Fairfield, .232 (49-20-125) to .092 (28-17-119).

With the exception of blocking, GW had the upper hand every other phase of the match including some pinpoint serving resulting in 10 aces, all which came against two Stags.

Fairfield (0-3) was led by Laurie Brand's 14 kills and 11 digs. The Stags opened their season with losses to Georgetown and Cincinnati as well as the Colonials in the two-day Patriot Invitational.

Seniors Sarah Hokom and Lauren Dunning were named to the 2003 Brion's Grille/Doubletree Patriot Invitational All-Tournament Team

GW (3-0) next hosts the George Washington Invitational, Friday and Saturday, at Smith Center. GW faces Villanova Friday at 7:00 p.m. following a 5:00 p.m. match between Lafayette and Coppin State.
