WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team suffered a Brown-out Saturday but it wasn't from Hurricane Ernesto. The Colonials opened the GW Volleyball Invitational Saturday without one of it's best players, junior Janine Brown, who suffered a sprained ankle in practice last week and will be sidelined throughout this weekend's tournament. Her presence was missed as the Colonials managed to defeat surprising Coppin State 30-24, 30-25, 30-22 in a one-hour, 38-minute match Saturday at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
GW (4-0) is coming off three straight victories in the inaugural DC Challenge after dispatching Georgetown, American and George Mason last weekend. Brown, named the DC Challenge tournament's MVP, was on the bench along with freshman setter Madelyn Bagby with a sore knee. Senior Kelly Kabbes led GW with a .529 hitting percentage on the strength of 10 kills in 17 swings while committing just one error. Kabbes also assisted on four blocks. Senior Abba Greenleaf added a team-high 11 kills and a pair of blcok solos to keep the Eagles honest at the net.
Coppin State's Jasmine George led the Eagles with 11 kills and had 12 digs while teammate Andrea McGant led all players with 21 digs.
GW combined to hit .240 (46-17-121) compared to .162 (41-20-130) for the Eagles.
