Volleyball Blocked by Liberty, 3-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- The George Washington Volleyball team dropped a narrow 3-1 decision to Liberty Friday morning in the opening match of the 20th annual Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup at the University of Virginia's Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville. Liberty won by the scores, 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20 in a one-hour, 43-minute battle. The two-day, four-team tournament includes North Florida and the host Cavaliers of Virginia. In a match that saw 11 lead changes and 35 ties, the Colonials were outblocked, 10-5.5, in an otherwise close match. The Flames also served six aces but more than cancelled out those points with 11 service errors in the contest. GW junior MacKenzie Knox was the most efficient Colonial on offense hitting .533 on nine kills in 15 swings while committing just one error. Senior co-captain Katie Zulandt was nearly as effective with a .458 hitting percentage on 12 kills in 24 attempts with just one error for 13 points. Sophomore Lauren Whyte again led GW with a team-high 16 kills and a pair of block assists for 18 points while Candace Silva-Martin and Leah Hill combined for 32 of GW's 59 digs. Setter Katie Crosby assisted on 54 of GW's 55 kills (98%) but committed her first two ball-handling errors in four matches this season. Liberty (3-1) was led by Karyl Bacon's 18 points on 15 kills and Kelly Haseman's 23 digs. The Flames out-hit GW, .284 to .252 for the match and totaled 75 points to just 61.5 for the Colonials. Even with Friday's loss, GW still holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series with Liberty.
GW (2-1) next plays later Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. against North Florida (0-3) and conludes the weekend by taking on Virginia Saturday at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon's match marks the first meeting between GW and North Florida in volleyball and the Colonials lead Virginia, 9-5, in the all-time series which dates back to 1981.
